Evaluation of Learning Agreement

When filling in my learning agreement, I thought about the course objectives as well as the impact of my agency in my practice. I reflected on my initial expectations and thought process and things that have changed over time after being exposed to the field (Carpenter, 2016). This was important to me as it was a signifier of my individual growth in the profession.

I also tried to look at any value I offered the agency to assess my impact. Going in, I anticipated improving my observation skills to learn more than what was being said. I also anticipated improving my critical thinking skills while still being guided by the organizational policies of the agency.

           Based on that, my evaluation was mostly positive with the answers ranging between 4’s and 5’s. At an individual level, I learned how to better customize treatment plans to fit the needs of a client. For group and family dynamics, a strength-based approach proved to be the best, but all these had to be done within the framework of ethics as dictated by NASW as well as organizational policies of A New Vision for You.

Therefore, the need to be one with the agency as well as other stakeholders in the profession, acted as a great learning resource. Open communication channels enabled me to interact with as many people and learn from them all. Lastly, I saw the role community plays in the treatment of a patient and how to use the community as a tool for the well-being of a client (Samson, 2016).

           The main take away from my evaluation led me to the core of social work whereby the client needs to come first. As a result, one has to learn past their biases and work with other people as well, to ensure that the client’s needs are being met. Communication is at the very center of it all and communication skills are paramount for every social worker.

Earlier in the quarter, we put a learning agreement in place in order to ensure that we were all getting the best possible experience in field and learning the proper skills that will aid us in being successful upon the completion of this program. For me, a majority of my goals in my learning agreement focused on my documentation, as well as my interaction with clients. I am pleased to say that I have succeeded in reaching most of these goals in my learning agreement. I have been able to interact with clients – mainly with groups as I often interact with clients during the intensive outpatient recovery groups, both the mixed group and the all-female empowerment group. I have also interacted with clients in the parent mentoring group, which has been beneficial for me as well. More recently, I have been able to interact on a more individual level with the clients and work on some assessments relating to the substance abuse clients, as well as for the summer mentoring program.

For the most part, there are a few areas in both learning agreements and the evaluation that still have room for improvement. For example, areas regarding research are places that may be touched on next quarter, as we have not reached that area yet in field. Other areas of improvement include my interaction with clients. While this quarter has more about light interaction and co-facilitation, next quarter will be more hands on and with solo facilitation of the recovery groups on certain day so of the week. For the most part, my overall field experience has been positive, and I have had nothing but positive interactions with all staff – from administrators to direct service professionals. My midterm evaluation is encouraging. However, as social work involves a lifetime of learning, there is always room for improvement in all areas. Overall, my field instructor has been very encouraging, and has explained that most areas I am competent in and that we will continue to work more as time goes on.

         “Since the beginning of the new millennium, the world has been experiencing profound change and uncertainty (Pomeroy & Nonaka, 2011).” This has not changed throughout the era or social norm we reside. With any amount of change, uncertainty will always be accompanied. The agency learning agreement is a good representation of the amount of change that is unknown or uncertain. I say this because we complete the agreement by utilizing our own perspectives and opinions about what can be given and how we will handle what is to come. This applies within the internship as well because the journey is not over and there are still many things to come and many things that are unknown. While working within the agencies, there may have been unknown, unplanned, or unexpected situations that could arise. This could be from changes in client dynamics, social workers transferring case load, or increase/decrease in client participation. It is how we as social workers adapt to the change and uncertainty that determine and help shape how we will be able to work within the mental health field. Our completed evaluations give a perspective on how we demonstrate to those in professional field how we utilize our skills and adapt to the changes that our clients bring. Also, how we create effective change and address the uncertainty of the clients. It is how we demonstrate our ability to think out of the box. Thinking outside the box requires letting go, maintaining an open mind, and embracing the unknown (Pomeroy & Nonaka, 2011).”

         The evaluation given by my field supervisor was better than I could have hoped. My last field supervisor judged my work not on how I preformed but how she would. That did not help my morale and created uncertainty in my ability as a social worker. However, this supervisor is encouraging and supportive with feedback regarding client services. To quote my response from the evaluation review, “This evaluation was a great review to encourage continuation of services where I demonstrate client/social worker professionalism. I am also glad to be informed of areas to improve my clinical practices such as utilizing more evaluation data to advocate for initiatives.” Moving forward, I hope to continue to work hard for my clients and to represent myself as a social worker despite the unknown of what could happen within the day-to-day.
